See the Cast of ‘Zoolander’ Then and Now
It seems crazy to think but it's been 12 years since we were first introduced to Blue Steel, Derek, Hansel and the rest of the 'Zoolander' crew. The film's spot-on lampooning of the world of supermodels left fans wanting much more. Thankfully, our dreams will soon become a reality, as a sequel is in the works.
So until then, let's take a glance at the cast of 'Zoolander' then and now.
Then: Ben Stiller might not have been Ben Stiller when he took on Derek Zoolander but he was getting there. He was seen in 'Reality Bites,' 'Happy Gilmore,' 'The Cable Guy,' and 'Meet the Parents,' and had his own TV series, 'The Ben Stiller Show,' in the early 90s. He also was an accomplished director.
Now: Today, Stiller is on top of his game, having rounded out the last (we think) of the 'Meet The Parents' films and recently appeared in 'Tower Heist' and 'The Watch.' His upcoming return to the director's chair for 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' is earning Oscar buzz.
Then: Owen Wilson had perfected his low-key quirk in roles in 'Armageddon,' 'Shanghai Noon' and with Stiller in 'Meet the Parents.'
Now: Wilson starred in the successful 'Cars' franchise, the blockbuster 'Wedding Crashers' and the Academy-Award winning, 'Midnight in Paris.' Among many upcoming projects this year, we're most excited for 'The Internship,' the comedy that reunites him with his 'Wedding Crashers' co-star Vince Vaughn.
Then: Christine Taylor had been appearing in film and television for about a decade before hitting 'Zoolander.' She was seen in 'The Wedding Singer' and 'The Craft' as well as a litany of great television roles. And how could we forget her portrayal of Marcia Brady in 'The Brady Bunch Movie!'
Now: Taylor went on to appear in 'Dodgeball' and 'Tropic Thunder.' She recently played herself in 'Burning Love' opposite husband Ben Stiller.
Then: Will Ferrell was still on 'Saturday Night Live' when he took on the role of crazed fashion designer Jacobim Mugatu. He had hit the big screen in 'Austin Powers,' and 'A Night at the Roxbury' beforehand.
Now: Ferrell ultimately left 'SNL' to become one of the biggest comedy stars on the planet. He was recently Cam Brady in 'The Campaign' with Zach Galifianakis and is currently filming 'Anchorman 2.'
Then: Milla Jovovich was a successful model/actress before hitting the 'Zoolander' set. Before playing Katinka Ingabogovinanana, we saw her in 'Chaplin,' 'Dazed and Confused' and as Leeloo Dallas in the bizarre-yet-enjoyable 'The Fifth Element.'
Now: Jovovich found great success after 'Zoolander' with the 'Resident Evil' franchise, for which she has appeared in five films (and is currently prepping for a sixth).
Then: David Duchovny had a small but memorable 'Zoolander' part as former hand model J.P. Prewitt. At the time, Duchovny was winding down his role of Fox Mulder in the very popular series, 'The X-Files.'
Now: Today, Duchovny plays the dysfunctional writer/father Hank Moody on Showtime's 'Californication.' The show just finished its sixth season.
Then: Jon Voight, who played Derek's working class father, was and is a well-respected actor having appeared in legendary films such as 'Midnight Cowboy,' 'Deliverance' and 'Coming Home.' It turns out the guy can do comedy too!
Now: Voight had a recurring role in the 2009 season of '24' and recently starred in the film 'Beyond.' As you'd expect, the Academy Award winner and father of Angelina Jolie has a few projects coming up as well.
Then: Showbiz legend Jerry Stiller gained recognition as one half of the comedy team Stiller and Meara. At the time of 'Zoolander,' Stiller was a few years out of playing a recurring part of Frank Costanza on NBC's 'Seinfeld.'
Now: Stiller earned himself another successful TV credit in the supporting role of Arthur Spooner on 'The King of Queens.' In 2012, the father to Ben was Morty in 'Excuse Me for Living.'
Then: David Bowie had been a rockstar for years when he took the stage (literally) in 'Zoolander,' acting as a judge for the famed Walk Off scene.
Now: Bowie just celebrated his 66th birthday this past January. And while he was thought to be "retired" he released an unexpected album titled 'The Next Day' back in March.
Then: Justin Theroux wasn't necessarily a household name yet but he certainly wasn't a nobody. Before playing Evil DJ, Theroux acted in 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion,' 'American Psycho' and 'Mulholland Drive.'
Now: Theroux went on to earn great credits in both acting and writing, having scribed 'Iron Man 2' and the recent 'Rock of Ages.' He's appeared in 'Wanderlust' alongside partner Jennifer Aniston and is set to both write and direct 'Zoolander 2.'
Then: It was a short and sweet role, but we loved seeing Billy Zane as himself palling around with Hansel. Around the time, Zane had past roles in 'The Phantom' and 'Titanic.' Why he popped up in 'Zoolander' is uncertain, but we didn't mind one bit. You can't get enough Zane!
Now: Billy Zane is still really good at being Billy Zane. Just this year he has three projects being released: 'The Ghost of Goodnight Lane,' 'The Ganzfeld Experiment,' and 'The Employer.'
