See the Cast of ‘Supergirl’ Then and Now

'Man of Steel' hits theaters this weekend, but what about the classic lady of steel. Yep, we're talking about 'Supergirl'!

Join us for a look back at star Helen Slater and the rest of the cast of the classic 1984 film and see what they're up to almost 30 years later.

Helen Slater, Kara Zor-El/Linda Lee/Supergirl

Then: Brooke Shields was the first choice for the role of Supergirl, in a version of the script that would also have featured Superman himself, Christopher Reeve. When Shields, and later, Melanie Griffith, both turned down the role, it went to little-known actress Helen Slater, whose only other acting credit included an 'ABC Afterschool Special.'

Now: 'Supergirl' launched Slater's career, leading her to parts in films like 'Ruthless People' and 'City Slickers.' She's made appearances on many TV shows, including 'Seinfeld,' and she played the role of Clark Kent's Kryptonian mother, Lara-El, in three episodes of 'Smallville.'

Faye Dunaway, Selena

Then: Acting legend Faye Dunaway -- star of 'Bonnie and Clyde'and 'Mommie Dearest' -- came aboard to play evil witch Selena when Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Goldie Hawn all rejected the role.

Now: Ms. Dunaway's impressive resume includes roles in 'Barfly,' 'The Thomas Crown Affair' and 'The Rules of Attraction.' She most recently directed, produced and starred in a film called 'Master Class.'

Peter O'Toole, Zaltar

Then: Like his co-star Faye Dunaway, Peter O'Toole was a highly-acclaimed actor ('Lawrence of Arabia,' 'The Lion in Winter') and a total "get" for the role of Zaltar, Supergirl's father. But O'Toole only took the role after legendary comedic actor Dudley Moore turned it down.

Now: O'Toole has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor eight times, making him the record-holder for most times nominated without ever having won the award. His last nomination was in 2006 for 'Venus,' but he lost to Forest Whitaker. O'Toole retired from acting in 2012.

Hart Bochner, Ethan

Then: Though the studio originally wanted John Travolta to play the role of Ethan, Supergirl's love interest, they went with actor Hart Bochner, star of 'Die Hard,' 'Terror Train' and 'Breaking Away.'

Now: Bochner has made recent guest appearances on 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Leverage,' and stars in the upcoming film 'A Book of Common Prayer.' He's also directed four films, including 'PCU' and 'High School High.'

Mia Farrow, Alura

Then: 'Rosemary's Baby' star Mia Farrow had already established herself as a powerhouse, starring in 12 Woody Allen films over the course of their notorious relationship. For 'Supergirl,' Farrow lent her talents as Alura, mother of the titular heroine.

Now: Farrow continues to act, but her real passion has been in her outstanding devotion to working as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to Africa. The actress has a total of 13 children, nine of whom were adopted.

Brenda Vaccaro, Bianca

Then: A Broadway actress and star of such films as 'Midnight Cowboy' and 'Capricorn One,' Brenda Vacarro played Bianca, Selena's partner in crime.

Now: Vacarro has appeared on a ton of TV shows, including 'Friends,' 'The Golden Girls,' 'Ally McBeal' and 'Nip/Tuck.' Most recently, she had a starring role in the HBO film 'You Don't Know Jack,' about the life of Dr. Jack Kevorkian.

Marc McClure, Jimmy Olsen

Then: Marc McClure starred in all four 'Superman' movies and 'Supergirl' as the same character -- newspaper photographer Jimmy Olsen.

Now: McClure went on to star in all three 'Back to the Future' films, 'That Thing You Do' and the WB Superman series 'Smallville,' in which he played Dax-Ur, a great Kryptonian scientist.

Maureen Teefy, Lucy Lane

Then: Maureen Teefy had previously starred in Steven Spielberg's '1941,' the hit drama 'Fame' and 'Grease 2' before landing the role of Lucy Lane, the younger sister of Lois Lane and friend to Supergirl.

Now: Teefy's last credited appearance was in 'The Kids of Fame,' a documentary about the stars of the film 'Fame.' She's also a playwright, and wrote a play about the life of silent film actress Clara Bow.
