On Sale at Goodwill: One Rare Salvador Dali Drawing
Every now and then, a lost work of art from one of history's greatest artists turns up in a garage sale or secondhand store. Some lucky buyer pays just mere pennies for something that's potentially worth thousands or more. This time, the store itself is the one profiting off a famous painting.
A Goodwill store in Tacoma, Washington is selling a rare sketch made by famed surrealist artist Salvador Dali to the highest bidder.
An employee of the thrift store recognized the signature on the framed painting. It is not known whether the donor knew what they were giving away, so the store decided to auction off the rare work of art to raise money for the organization. As of Saturday, the bids have reached well above $7,000.
The store describes the Dali work as a framed drawing with some slight paper warping, discolored speckling and scratches on the glass. The store also said only 150 copies of the sketches were ever made.
This isn't the first time a Goodwill store has found a rare piece of art. Last August, a woman in North Carolina bought an abstract painting called 'Vertical Diamond' at her local thrift store for just under $10. The painting turned out to be an original work done by Russian artist Ilya Bolotowsky, and an auction house appraised its value at $15,000 to $20,000.
