Then: Bedard, who is part Inuit, was not only the speaking voice of Disney’s Pocahontas, she was also the physical model on which the character’s design was based. However, it was Tony-nominated singer Judy Kuhn who lent Pocahontas her singing voice, which led to the film’s Oscar win for Best Original Song for ‘Colors of the Wind.’

Now: Several years after reprising her role in the straight-to-video release ‘Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World,’ Bedard went on to play Pocahontas’ mother in Terrence Malick’s live-action drama ‘The New World.’ She and the suitably surreal filmmaker most recently reteamed for 2011’s ‘Tree of Life,’ in which she played a mystic messenger.
