The World's Largest Monopoly Board has opened in an Illinois city to honor the popular board game's original creator.

Where Is The World's Largest Monopoly?

The origins of Monopoly can be traced back to the early 1900s. According to BoardGameGeek.com, the game is based on what was once known as The Landlord's Game.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Magie was born in Macomb, Illinois in 1866. She designed The Landlord's Game and received a patent for it in 1904.

The game was rebranded as "Monopoly after it was sold to Parker Brothers.

Now, Magie is being honored with the world's largest Monopoly game around the courthouse square in the middle of Macomb.

How Does Macombopoly Work?

Macombopoly consists of a 4,000-foot-long playing board. Players scan a QR code which opens a mobile app used to play the game.

Oversized playing pieces have been installed around the square. Players can snap photos with a giant top hat or a pair of spinning dice while playing the game.

A life-size sculpture of Magie also has been unveiled at the game site.

Macombopoly can be played individually or in teams. The game is being used as an attraction to get people to checkout businesses in downtown Macomb. Some prizes are connected to stores around the square.

Additionally, the game also draws inspiration from the town's history. For example, the spot on the board where the virtual "jail" is placed matches up with where Macomb's original jail sat in the square.

Macombopoly will be a permanent feature. It is available to play anytime 365 days a year.
