See the Cast of ‘Doogie Howser, M.D.’ Then and Now

Then: That was Neil Patrick Harris as kid physician and computer diarist Doogie Howser. (Doogie was the first blogger!) He made his screen debut in 1988 in the film 'Clara's Heart,' which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe nomination.

Now: Besides playing womanizer Barney Stinson on 'How I Met Your Mother,' Harris is known for the cult internet series 'Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog,' his appearances in the 'Harold and Kumar' film franchise, and for having a generally healthy sense of humor about himself. Harris has two children with his partner, Broadway actor David Burka, and is an entertaining presence on Twitter.

Then: The role of Vinnie, Doogie's "normal" high school buddy, was memorably played by Max Casella. During that time period Casella also appeared in the movies 'Newsies' and 'Ed Wood.'

Now: Casella played Benny Fazio on the last few seasons of 'The Sopranos' and then kept the HBO gangster thing going as wiseguy Leo D'Alessio on 'Boardwalk Empire. He recently played another tough guy in the Brad Pitt crime flick 'Killing them Softly,' and has roles in the upcoming Woody Allen movie 'Blue Jasmine' and the Samuel L. Jackson remake of 'Oldboy.'

Then: Doogie came from a medical family and his dad, Dr. David Howser, was played by James Sikking. Sikking was already a recognizable TV face, having starred for seven seasons on the Steven Bochco procedural drama 'Hill Street Blues.'

Now: While the 69-year-old's acting career has slowed over the last several years, he did pop on on a 2012 episode of 'The Closer.'

Then: Belinda Montgomery played Doogie's mom Katherine. Initially a housewife, the character got a job at the hospital with her son. The Canadian actress guest-starred on just about every relevant '80s drama from 'Miami Vice' to 'Magnum, P.I.' to 'Dynasty' to 'Murder, She Wrote' before catching on as a regular with 'Doogie Howser, M.D.'

Now: Montgomery last appeared in 2010's 'TRON: Legacy.' She is also a lifelong watercolor painter who sold her first piece at age 10

Then: You probably remember Lawrence Pressman as Dr. Benjamin Canfield, Doogie's boss at the hospital. Pressman career stretched back to the early '70s when he was one of the stars of the blaxploitation film 'Shaft.'

Now: Pressman has been recently seen on 'Mad Men,' 'Law & Order: LA' and 'Criminal Minds.' He was also a regular on 'Judging Amy' and 'General Hospital,' playing judges on both shows. He's played a lot of judges. He also played Dick Cheney in the controversial TV movie 'DC 9/11: Time of Crisis.'

Then: Lisa Dean Ryan played Doogie's love interest Wanda Plenn, who could say she dated a doctor when she was still in high school. Ryan left the show before its last season to be a lead on the college drama 'Class of '96.'

Now: While Ryan seemed like she was on track to stardom, it never really materialized for her. He last role was in the 2005 TV movie 'Mystery Woman: Vision of a Murder.' According to various online sources, she currently works in real estate in the Los Angeles area.

Then: Layng played Nurse Curly Spaulding, who at one point awkwardly dated both Doogie and Dr. Canfield. 'Doogie Howser' was the bulk of Layng's TV career.

Now: Layng married playwright David Henry Hwang and they have two children. She was in Hwang's 2012 film 'White Frog,' which was her first screen appearance in almost two decades.

Then: In what was her first and only major role, Lucy Boryer played Janine Stewart, best friend to Wanda and girlfriend to Vinnie.

Now: On Twitter, Boryer lists herself as an "Environmentalist, Women & Child Human Rights Activist" and has the photos to back up her political activity. She also recently popped up on the web series 'Let's Big Happy,' which was her first credit since the 1994 TV movie 'In The Line of Duty: Price of Vengeance.'

Then: On 'Doogie Howser,' Redmond was con-turned-hospital orderly Raymond Alexander. He followed that up with recurring roles on 'NYPD Blue' and 'Murder One.'

Now: In 2007, Redmond wrote and starred in the movie 'If I Knew You Were a Genius,' which also featured Whoopi Goldberg and Sharon Stone. He most recently has a small part in the drama 'K-11,' which is directed by Kristen Stewart's mom Jules.

Then: Dr. Jack Mcguire, a hospital resident and Doogie's sometime rival, was played by Mitchell Anderson with possibly the greatest haircut from the early '90s. Previously, Anderson had been in the movie 'SpaceCamp' and was Richard Carpenter in 'The Karen Carpenter Story.' He went on to be recurring character Ross Workmen on 'Party of Five.'

Now: Anderson quit acting not long after 'Party of Five,' moved to Atlanta and studied to become a chef. He currently runs a few restaurants, and in 2012 he revived his acting career by starring in an Atlanta-area production of the play 'Next Fall.'
