The Worst City for Traffic Is Hardly a Surprise (Or Is It?)

People go to this city to see the sights, but they may be stuck looking out the side of the road more than they’d like.

INRIX has published a study ranking which cities in the U.S. have the most traffic in its Global Traffic Scoreboard. While you can probably figure out the top two, it’s really a matter of which order to place them. Los Angeles came in first, while New York took the silver position.

Most Congested Cities

  1. Los Angeles
  2. New York
  3. San Francisco
  4. Atlanta
  5. Miami
  6. Washington, D.C.
  7. Dallas
  8. Boston
  9. Chicago
  10. Seattle

The “Global Traffic Scorecard analyzes and ranks the impact of traffic congestion in 1,064 cities across 38 countries worldwide.”

Los Angeles isn’t just the most congested city in the country — it also sets the pace among all cities on the planet. Drivers there logged 104 hours in traffic last year during peak driving periods. That’s par for the course in the U.S., which has 11 of the 25 most-gridlocked cities in the world. And that means you don’t want this dog to get behind the wheel.

L.A. can take some solace, though, in knowing it’s not home for the most congested roadway in the country. That honor belongs to New York City’s Cross Bronx Expressway, where drivers sit in traffic for a total of 86 hours annually.
