We already know movie tickets are at an all-time high — and now one theatergoer is fighting back against the exorbitant cost of the popcorn and soda we often buy to munch on during screenings of ‘The Lorax.’

Michigan resident Joshua Thompson has filed a class action suit against his local AMC theater in the hopes of forcing theaters statewide to reduce concession prices.

Thompson said that he used to take his own snacks to the movies until his local theater banned the practice, and cites paying $8 for a Coke and a package of Goobers candy at the concession stand — nearly three times the $2.73 he paid for the same items at a nearby convenience store.

He got tired of being taken advantage of,” Thompson’s attorney said. “It’s hard to justify prices that are three and four times higher than anywhere else.”

Thompson’s suit accuses AMC theaters of violating the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by charging grossly excessive prices for snacks, and seeks refunds for customers who were overcharged, a civil penalty against the theater chain and any other relief the judge might see fit to grant.

And while legal experts think the case will be tossed out, that doesn’t mean movie-lovers aren’t on-board.

“The prices are ridiculous,” said theater-goer Rebecca Motley, adding that she recently spent $5 for a morning movie ticket and $11 for soft drinks and popcorn.

“When I was a kid, $1 could get you into the movies and buy you a pop and popcorn. But not anymore,” Motley said. “I don’t know how kids can go on their own to a movie anymore.”
