Miss Universe Canada Crowns Wrong Contestant Due to Typo

Miss Universe Canada Crowns Wrong Contestant Due to Typo
Miss Universe Canada

In what has to be one of the cruelest things to ever happen due to a typo, 26-year-old Denise Garrido of Ontario reigned as the new Miss Universe Canada for a full 24 hours before being informed that she hadn’t actually won the competition. Turns out, judges miscalculated and she came in fourth, not first.

Officials say a typo occurred while someone was inputting the judges’ handwritten scores into a computer. As a result, Garrido was mistakenly crowned the winner when Riza Santos of Calgary had won instead.

“My heart sank. I was so sad,” said Garrido. “It’s been the ultimate dream of mine. All of the other pageants were building toward this one.”

Garrido says she’s not bitter, but fellow contestant Marwa Ishow said Garrido should win anyway. What’s more, Ishow says the mix-up calls the entire pageant into question.

“How we do we know that everything else wasn’t wrong? The whole pageant seems like it was staged,” Ishow said.

What do you think? Should Garrido win despite the error?
