In what's surely a milestone for gay rights, two high school students recently became one of the nation's first lesbian couples to be elected homecoming king and queen.

Senior Rebeca Arellano and her girlfriend Haileigh Adams were named king and queen, respectively, at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego. And while the move has elicited praise from many quarters, it's also proved to be highly controversial.

Ever since the event became news, the school has reportedly been receiving hateful phone calls and emails, some of which have been described by school officials as "disturbing."

Watch a news report below featuring footage of the ceremony and Arellano's moving reaction to being crowed the school's first female homecoming king.
