Then: Jaleel White didn’t join the cast of ‘Family Matters’ until midway through the sitcom’s first season. But when he did his nerdy, suspender-loving character Urkel became the show’s breakout star and fueled its nine-year run. During that time, White also voiced Sonic The Hedgehog in various animated television versions of the popular video game.

Now: While White struggled mightily with typecasting once ‘Family Matters’ ended, 2011 marked a successful year for the 35-year-old. He appeared on the TV series ‘House MD’ and ‘Are We There Yet,’ and in the movie ‘Judy Moody and The Not Bummer Summer.’ However, his most recent claim to fame is being cast as a competitor on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’
