Global Chocolate Shortage Is the Worst News Ever
The bad news? There may be a worldwide chocolate shortage on the horizon.
The good news? Well, there is none.
Two of the world’s leading chocolate manufacturers, Mars and Barry Callebaut, are warning that we are knee deep in the midst of a “chocolate deficit,” which is a fancy way of saying we’re eating more cocoa than what is being produced.
In fact, demand outpaced supply by some 70,000 metric tons last year and that number is only expected to grow like your waist size after scarfing down too many Kit Kats.
Part of the problem stems from drought in areas where cocoa is produced, particularly Ghana and the Ivory Coast. There’s also the issue of something called frosty pod, which ruins cocoa production.
What’s the end result? Prices are going to soar. In fact, they’ve already jumped 60% in the last two years.
So, chocolate is scarce and more expensive. We told you it’s all bad bad news, although if we dig deep maybe we can see a silver lining in fewer teenagers getting acne.
