One thing about being a pyrotechnics engineer is that you have co-workers who know a lot about explosives. So when David Banks, who works at Quantum Special Effects, was presented with an at-work birthday cake for turning 50, he should have suspected something was up.

As you can see, the cake exploded shortly after Banks blew out the candles. We suspect it was detonated by remote control, but if it was on a timer or some type of trigger device that was a pretty gutsy prank because flaming birthday cake is not good for the skin.

Oddly, the camera man turns away right after the explosion. One would have thought that working with pyrotechnics would cure a person of getting the yips when something blows up.

Though, all in all, it was a successful birthday surprise. The big downside being that seemingly nobody got to eat any birthday cake.
