Disney to Release ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and Other Classics in 3D
In the wake of ‘The Lion King 3D’ standing proudly atop the box office like King Mufasa for two straight weekends, Disney announced Tuesday that four more animated classics will return to the big screen in eye-popping 3D.
The first 3D re-release will be ‘Beauty And The Beast’ (January 13, 2012), followed by ‘Finding Nemo’ (September14, 2012), ‘Monsters Inc.’ (January 18, 2013) and ‘The Little Mermaid’ (September 13, 2013).
Of course, since gussying up a proven box office draw with 3D technology for a whole new generation of rugrats is basically a license to print money, it’s a pretty safe bet that we will also be getting up-close-and-personal with other Disney hits like ‘Aladdin’ or ‘Peter Pan’ as the decade progresses.
At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before Disney gets to ‘The Black Cauldron,’ the box office dud that sunk the animation giant back in the ’80s. When that happens, it’ll be safe to pronounce the 3D trend officially dead.
