An Arcade Racing Game That Actually Drives [VIDEO]

Garnet Hertz

Remember going to the arcade as a kid and playing those driving simulation games? Well, what if instead just sitting there when we revved the engines and hit the gas, the things actually moved?

Garnet Hertz, a research scientist at the University of California in Irvine has actually created an arcade racing game console that drives just like a real car when played. Taking the arcade cabinet of the classic game Out Run, he retrofitted it onto a golf cart and programmed custom software to transform the road in front of the car into an image on the game’s screen.

Hertz and his fellow researchers envision translating the concept to assist people with disabilities, providing new ways to interact with the world that were never before possible.
