America’s Coldest City Is (Probably) What You Think It Is

When it comes to being frigid, no place can outshiver this one.

24/7 Wall St. has come out with a list of the country’s 50 coldest cities (among towns with at least 10,000 people). It’s a perfect time, considering some regions have been brought to their knees by some heavy snow.

How did the rankings come to be?

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the minimum average temperature for each city’s coldest month between 1981 and 2010 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.”

The site also took record low temperatures, average annual snowfall and average wind speed into account.

Fairbanks, Alaska came out on top. With a average low of nearly 17-below in its coldest month (January), a record of 66-below and 64-and-a-half inches of snow per year, this is not a locale that embraces bikini season.

Grand Forks, N.D. took second, one of four cities in that state that appear in the top 10. The list sheds some light (although, apparently not a hot one) on the fact cold in America is not spread equally, with only 19 states showing up in the top 50.

Here are America’s 10 coldest cities. And that’s the stone cold truth.

  1. Fairbanks, Alaska
  2. Grand Forks, N.D.
  3. Williston, N.D.
  4. Fargo, N.D.
  5. Duluth, Minn.
  6. Aberdeen, S.D.
  7. St. Cloud, Minn.
  8. Bismarck, N.D.
  9. Marquette, Mich.
  10. Huron, S.D.
